US HOW IT STARTED
The history of the Gasthof Schönauer is long and full of tradition.
In 1960, the establishment—then known as “Gasthaus Stöger”—was taken over by Margit and Heinrich Schönauer. They were the second generation of innkeepers to take on the place, running it with heart and soul in the town center of Schrems.
At first, the inn consisted only one dining room and a garden. But by the late 1960s, the garden was converted into an additional dining hall to offer more space for hungry and thirsty guests even during the colder months. From early on, Alexander Schönauer joined the family business to help out, and in April 1988, he officially took over the business.
In 1979, the first eight hotel rooms were built, and in 1994, they were expanded by four single rooms. Today, the inn can accommodate up to 20 guests. In 2019, the double rooms underwent a complete renovation, including modern bathrooms and new furnishings.
Since 2023, the Gasthof Schönauer has been officially run by Maria Schönauer.
